Letter Drop

In the spirit of the classic falling-piece matcher.

Pieces of one to three white envelopes drop into an old stone well. Every column has a character at the top — type it and the piece drops into that column. The keyboard is the only control.

Two things to read

Type a column's character and the piece drops there. A small tag above the falling piece carries one more character, marked "rotate": type that one and the piece turns. So the column labels are a small reading test you take several times a minute, and the answer is where the piece lands.

Matching letters

Every envelope carries a letter, from a small handful per level (three at first, up to five later). When a piece lands, loose envelopes settle, and envelopes with the same letter that touch — side by side or one on another — clear, with their letter read aloud. A clear can let others settle into a new match, and each link in a chain is worth more than the last.

Filling up

If a new piece cannot fit, the well overflows: you lose a life and it empties. A mistyped character makes the pieces fall faster for the rest of the level. Level one asks for ten cleared envelopes in a six-column well; later levels ask for more in a wider well, and after level fifty the columns and envelopes carry whole words.

Its own pieces

The pieces here are dots, pairs, triples and corners, every one plain white — what matters is the letters.
