Script FallPlay

Privacy

A plain list of everything Script Fall keeps about you, why, and who else sees any of it. It is written from what the site actually does, not from a template.

If you just play the demo

Nothing is sent to us. Your settings — language, volume, sound, which characters you know — are kept in your own browser's storage, on your device, and never leave it.

If you make an account

We store: your email address, to confirm the account and to let you recover it; your username, which is shown on the leaderboards; your password, but only as a salted, one-way hash — we cannot read it, and neither could anyone who stole the database; if you sign in with Google or Facebook, the account ID they give us for you, and nothing else from them; the date the account was made, when you last signed in, whether you confirmed your email, and when you accepted the user agreement. We ask for your month and year of birth when you sign up, but we don't keep it: we keep only whether you are an adult or a teenager. If you add young players, we keep a parent PIN, stored one-way like a password.

When you sign in we store a session, so you stay signed in. The key your browser holds is stored on our side only as a one-way hash, and it expires.

What you do on the site

Every score you post: the score, the level, the game, the language, the difficulty and the time, under your username — the leaderboards are public, so these are too. Your story mode journey: which stops you have cleared, your stars, your ink and what your hero is wearing, so it follows you to any device.

Kept with your journey are a few small records that make the practice features work, and nothing more: which days you practised (for the weekly practice bar and its bonus), the last day you visited (so Yai can welcome you back, and have a gift waiting after a week away), how many story stops, games and daily challenges you played today (so she can suggest a rest), which characters have become fluent (so each one is celebrated only once), and the day you last did your review. None of it is used for anything else, and none of it is shared. Your character-by-character practice record — which characters you know, how quickly, and which you mix up, used to pick what's due for review — stays on your device and isn't sent anywhere.

Your picture and badges — the picture is just a number, one of the 384 we drew (a grid of animals — the whole Chinese zodiac among them — in different colours), never uploaded — which are shown beside your username on the leaderboards. And a list of what your account owns: badges you've earned in story mode, pictures you've earned or bought with ink, whether you're a founder (and so have lifetime access), and, if we ever sell anything, what you bought — each with the date and how it came to you.

Which of our announcements you've seen — so each one shows you once, and any ink with it comes once.

If an account is closed for breaking the user agreement, we keep its email address, username and sign-in IDs on a list, so they can't be used to make a new account. The account's scores are kept off the leaderboards, and come back if the closure is undone.

Your IP address

We use your IP address to slow down anyone hammering the sign-in or score forms, and to enforce bans. Depending on how the site is hosted, it may be stored alongside each score you post.

Who else sees anything

The voices that read letters, words and sentences aloud are made in advance and served from our own site, so hearing one sends nothing about you to anyone. Where a clip hasn't been made yet, your browser's own speech voice reads it instead.

Nobody buys or receives your data from us. There are no adverts and no tracking or analytics services. The fonts are served from our own site, so loading a page tells nobody else you visited. Two outside services are involved, and each sees only what it needs: the email service that sends the confirmation link, which sees your email address; and, only if you choose them, Google or Facebook sign-in, which work under their own privacy policies. Nothing is for sale yet; if that changes, the payment company will be named here before the first sale.

Children

Script Fall is for learners of every age, children included. Anyone under 13 plays as a young player on a parent's or guardian's account, added by that grown-up after reading a short note about exactly what we keep. Children can also play the demo, which sends us nothing at all.

For a young player we keep only: a name we make up for them (like SwiftOtter42), which is what the leaderboards show; the picture they pick; their progress, stars and ink; and their scores. That is all. We never ask a young player for their name, email, photo, voice or anything else that could identify them. There is no chat and no messaging, no advertising, and young players cannot buy anything.

Speaking mode is off for young players unless the parent switches it on. It uses the browser's own speech recognition, which sends the sound of the child's voice to the browser's maker to be turned into text; it never comes to us, and we never record it.

A parent can see, change or delete a young player at any time from Settings › Young players: keep them off the leaderboards, give them a new made-up name, or delete them — and deleting a young player deletes everything we keep for them. None of it is shared with anyone. Leaving a young player's session needs the parent's PIN, so a child can't wander into the grown-up's account.

How long we keep things

We keep an account's information while the account exists, and a young player's while the parent keeps them on the account. Delete either, and what we kept for it goes too. Sign-in sessions expire on their own; email confirmation links after 48 hours.

Identifiers we use to run the site

A signed-in browser holds a session key so it stays signed in, and we use it — and your IP address — to keep scores fair and to slow down anyone hammering the forms. They are never used for advertising, profiling or tracking you anywhere else.

Deleting your account

You can delete your account yourself, any time: Settings › Account › Delete account. Type your username (and the parent PIN, if you set one), and the account goes, with every young player on it and everything we kept for any of you — progress, scores, clothes and purchases. It can’t be undone. Or write to hello@manoistudios.com from the email address on the account and we’ll do it for you.
