The 44 Thai consonants
Thai letters come with names, not just sounds, and the name is the fastest way to keep them apart. Learn them as a chant, then drill them under time pressure.

Each consonant is taught with a word that starts with it: ก is ko kai (chicken), ข is kho khai (egg), ง is ngo ngu (snake), ม is mo ma (horse). The names exist because so many letters share a sound — knowing that ท is tho thahan ("soldier") and ธ is tho thong ("flag") is how a Thai speaker tells you which one to write. Script Fall speaks the full name each time you hit the letter, so the chant builds itself while you play.
Three classes, five tones
| Class | Examples | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Mid | ก จ ด ต บ ป อ | Takes all four tone marks; the baseline for reading tone. |
| High | ข ฉ ถ ผ ฝ ศ ษ ส ห | Unmarked syllables read rising; pairs with ห to raise low letters. |
| Low | ค ง ช ซ ท น พ ฟ ม ย ร ล ว ฮ | The largest group; unmarked live syllables read mid. |
The tone of a syllable is a function of three things: the class of the initial consonant, the tone mark if there is one, and whether the syllable ends in a stop sound. This is a rule system, not a memory list, but it only becomes usable once the letters themselves are automatic — which is the job this drill does.
A sensible drilling order
The game introduces 18 workhorse letters first (ก ข ค ง จ ด ต น บ ป ม ย ร ล ว ส ห อ), then the next band (ช ซ ท พ ฟ ผ ฝ ถ ฉ ฮ) mixed with the first vowels, then the less common ญ ภ ศ ษ ธ ฆ ณ ฐ, and finally the rare Pali-derived letters ฎ ฏ ฑ ฒ ฌ ฬ and the obsolete ฃ and ฅ. You will meet the rare ones in place names and formal writing, so they are worth the last two tiers rather than the first.
