In the spirit of the classic lights-and-sounds memory game.

A ring of pads, each carrying a character. The board lights them one at a time and says each one aloud; then you type the sequence back from memory. Every round adds one more step.

The only game here that asks you to recall

Every other game on this site tests recognition: the character is in front of you and you have to know what it is. This one tests recall and order, which is a different and harder thing — and the one that actually predicts whether you can read running text later. The pads stay visible the whole time, so it is only the order you have to hold; the characters themselves are never hidden from you.

Hearing, not just seeing

Each pad speaks its character as it lights. So the sequence arrives twice, once through your eyes and once through your ears, which is the pairing that makes a character stick. If you have recorded human pronunciations in the Study Room, those are what you hear.

A slip does not shorten the sequence

Press the wrong pad, or run out of answer time, and you lose a life — then the pad you should have pressed lights up on its own and the whole sequence plays again from the start. You never get an easier sequence for failing, and you always get to see the answer.

How far it goes

Four pads and a four-long sequence at level one; six pads and a nine-long sequence by level fifty, with each flash down to four tenths of a second. Nine is about the ceiling of what anyone holds in short term memory, so it stops there rather than becoming a stunt.
