Starter kanji, and the typing problem

Roughly 2,100 kanji are taught through Japanese schooling. The first forty carry a surprising share of everyday text, and they are the ones this game uses.

Two kinds of reading

Most kanji have an on-reading borrowed from Chinese and a kun-reading from native Japanese. 月 is tsuki on its own (moon) and getsu in compounds (月曜日, Monday). You do not need every reading to start; you need one reading solid enough to type the character.

Typing a kanji is a two-step move

You type the reading in kana, then press space to convert and pick the candidate. That means an unknown reading is an untypable character, however well you recognise it. Script Fall's fifth tier shows each kanji with a reading hint, then removes the hint once you are past level 20, so the reading and the shape end up stored together.

Compounds come next

After level 50 the expert rounds switch to words: 東京, 日本, 先生, 学校, 電車, 花火, 富士山. Typing a compound is one conversion, not two, which is how Japanese input actually feels once you are fluent.
