Matras are the hard part

The independent vowels — अ आ इ ई — are what you meet in a chart. The matras — ा ि ी ु ू — are what you meet in actual words, hanging off a consonant, sometimes before it even though they are said after it. They get their own group in the Study Room and their own place in the games.

The order is not arbitrary

क ख ग घ ङ, then च छ ज झ ञ, and so on: the consonants are arranged by where in the mouth they are made, moving from the back to the lips. Learning them in that order costs nothing and makes the whole chart hold together.
