Pinyin, tones, and the candidate bar
Pinyin is the bridge between the sound of a Chinese word and the character on the screen. It is also, on every phone and laptop, the way you type.

Mandarin has four tones plus a neutral tone: high and flat (mā), rising (má), dipping (mǎ), falling (mà). The classic set 妈 麻 马 骂 — mother, hemp, horse, scold — is the standard demonstration that tone is not decoration. Pinyin writes the tone as a mark over the vowel; most IMEs let you ignore it while typing and pick from candidates instead, which is convenient and also why many learners' tones quietly rot.
How the candidate bar changes practice
Type shi and you get a long list: 是, 十, 时, 事, 室, 试. Choosing correctly requires knowing which character you actually want, so typing is a recall test with a multiple-choice safety net. Script Fall makes that explicit: the falling target is the character, the hint is the pinyin, and the hint disappears after the first two tiers.
Spoken mode and tones
Switch on the microphone and the game listens in Chinese. Speech recognition returns written text, so a wrong tone usually comes back as a different character and simply fails to match. That is not a real pitch analysis and it should not be sold as one, but as a practical check it is honest: if the recogniser keeps hearing 马 when you meant 妈, your first tone needs work.
